In the first year of the open west, an annual open competition for the contemporary arts, 40 artists have been selected to exhibit. Work includes installation, paint, sculpture, print, photography and drawing. Over 2200 works were submitted by 380 UK and international artists. The panel of selectors for 2009 included the curators Lyn Cluer Coleman and Sarah Goodwin, together with Zelda Cheatle of the WMG Photography Fund and Richard Cox of Howard Gardens Gallery, Cardiff. A first prize of £2,000 was awarded to Masaki Yada and two additional prizes of £500 were awarded to Rachel Cunningham and Naoko Miyazaki.
