I have now almost completed the latest phase of THEN & NOW, for which the Artist’s Information Company funded dramaturgy consultancy.

It’s been a bit of a roller coaster, with the work swinging around wildly, at times leaving me wondering what it really was about. Gemma Williams, my dramaturg, has been great at reassuring me that this is not only normal, but positive. I have found another artist, Paula Sturges to perform alongside me, and between the three of us we have reached a point where we can begin to show people what we’ve been doing.

The current archaeological dig of Bronze Age barrows on Petersfield Heath is due to finish at the end of this week and I am optimistic about gaining access to the trench to show our work in open rehearsal. Our piece takes place in the trench to set it in the context of life in the Bronze Age, and our short narrative outlines the similarities and differences of life then and now. We plan to perform after George Anelay, Archaeologist and Field Director, has finished his final talk on Saturday afternoon.

These images are from a devising session:

George’s talk starts at 4.30pm and lasts about 30-45 minutes, and excavations permitting, Paula and I will then get into the trench and perform our piece.

There will tea and scones, and maybe something stronger back at my studio, 5 minutes walk from the site, together with an explanation of what a dramaturg is.

A second showing of the work will be at 4pm at Barrow 8 on Tuesday 17th May

BOTH PERFORMANCES ARE DEPENDENT ON THE DIG’S COMPLETION – I will post on Friday if it has to be postponed

See you there, Fiona
