I’m making a noose for myself_2012-

In Seoul, there is a famous bridge, Mapo Bridge, which is referred to as the ‘Suicide Bridge’ because, tragically, many people jump off this bridge to take their lives. Personally, I do not think suicide is a personal problem, which a lot of people believe, but rather is a society problem. I thus was inspired to give people who commit suicide a voice through the project, ‘I’m making a noose for myself’. Interestingly, while doing this project, the noose, which symbolises death, also became a symbol of hope – a lifeline. By the act of continually making the noose, I was lengthening the lifeline itself. The idea behind it is that the noose becomes so huge, that you cannot use it to kill yourself, but it becomes a reminder of how you are anchored to life. I wanted this project to be provocative so that people who feel they have a ‘noose around the neck’ would re-imagine their situation and give themselves reasons to live.
