After 13 years as Artistic Director of award-winning Towner in Eastbourne, Matthew Rowe has been appointed Director of firstsite in Colchester. During his directorship, Towner has won a series of architectural, community and learning awards and has received support from the ambitious Art Fund International scheme, launched in 2007.

Rowe commented: “The positioning of firstsite within the local community is essential to my new role. I hope to extend firstsite’s mission in bringing excellent art to everyone, supporting artists from the region to develop their careers and demonstrating the value that contemporary visual art brings to society.”

Rowe succeeds Katherine Wood, firstsite’s Director of 18 years, who stepped down earlier this year. Rowe will take up his new position in January 2013.
