Located at the site of a former nuclear missile airbase in Newbury, Corn Exchange Newbury & New Greenham Arts (NGA) acts as a development space to support artists working within multi-disciplinary fields. For 2013, it is launching a new opportunity for artists who have graduated in the last two years.

The successful applicant will receive a free studio for twelve-months, providing space to develop their creative and professional practice. In return, the artist will be expected to actively engage with the organisation’s fast developing visual arts programme.

The residency offers a 200 sq ft studio with the Studio 8 group that work within NGA, providing space for the selected graduate to develop work for an exhibition or other opportunity they already have planned. Also on offer is the chance to take part in Studio 8’s annual exhibition at NGA.

A proactive approach is key, as NGA require some return on the free studio space being offered. As well as producing new work, in tandem with the evolving visual arts programming at the centre, the graduate will deliver workshops and events pertinent to their own field of research. During the residency the graduate will also help with exhibition production and installation.

James Gough, General Manager at Corn Exchange Newbury & NGA, explained: “Over the last ten years, New Greenham Arts – which is supported by Greenham Common Trust – has seen a steadily developing visual arts programme for audiences in West Berkshire. We aim to create a space where artists can develop, and we recognise the difficult transition for many artists from finishing university and establishing themselves as an artist in their own right. We hope to be able to fill that gap for one graduate by providing an opportunity to develop without the usual financial restraints of hiring a studio.”

As well as providing a creative space for the graduate to access new ideas and conversation, the opportunity will also help develop skills for producing, marketing and administrating a public-facing exhibitions and education programme, widening their own approach to making and exhibiting work. The chosen applicant will also benefit from accessing a new peer group by mixing with existing studio holders.

The deadline for applications is 5pm, Thursday 28 February 2013. See Residency, Exhibiting, Awards and Professional development opportunities.
