Artist and Director at AirSpace Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent. A visual artist working in photography and film, installation and assemblage, performance and text. The site and location specific practice is centred on acts of walk and response, and carried out largely in the public realm. Themes of urban place and space narrow down to a particular focus on urban land use and the post-industrial human living condition, alongside ideas of absence and presence and longing and belonging in the contemporary city. The work invariably contains an element of walking, both as part of a research methodology, but also as a performative gesture. The outcome of the walk will often take the form of a temporary structural, site-specific intervention, designed to create a dialogue with the public. Increasingly I have become interested in the idea of the walker as a lone nomad, stripped of tribe or community, enacting a singular, peripatetic, itinerant approach to urban journeys.
