Initially from East Yorkshire I am currently studying a BA Hons in Sculpture at Northumbria University (2013-2016). It is the emphatic and obscure which influences Jacob Sheader’s practice. He employs the audience to become ambiguous as they navigate and create dialogues with his work. The constructions imply an anxiety for the viewer because of their unrecognisable forms; which converge with Sheader’s confident application of plaster over structural materials (timber carcassing, mesh and steel). This durable and robust body of the work pushes itself to adopt monolithic qualities. The use of pigment in Sheader’s work poses meaning and requests a deeper consideration to context. The juxtaposition of colour with form and material produces arresting, indistinct and inert compositions which allows his sculptures and paintings to function as a testimony to physicality, obscurity and ambiguity.
