Kelly O’Brien is an American mixed media artist who lives and works near Bath, England. As an MA Fine Art student at Bath Spa University (expected degree award Fall 2019), her research is focused on mixed media sculpture. She is interested in a duality between using minimalist strategies paired with organic expressive materials to explore human issues – to find tension both in the work and in the combination of material choices. Her work tests the limits of material and form – how opposites such as strength and delicacy, impermanence and stability, accretion and disintegration come together and fall apart. She is interested in how strength and agency might be expressed through materials that appear inadequate for the task at hand. Contingency, failure, repair, and reuse are central to this process. There is a call and response that asks her to find solutions as materials fail, are mended, weighted or reinforced. Bath
