After Human Group Show (Neil Clements, Laura Cooper, Patrick Jameson, Kevin Pollock and Victoria Skogsberg) March 2007 After Human is the title to this group show that makes use of a large empty shop space. Unique in that the entire work finding, preparing and funding the show has been done by the participating artist. Or not so unique; this grassroots attitude to getting your art seen has a bit of a history in Glasgow. However, no expense has been spared and when entering the building there is a slickness to the work, the presentation and the space itself that is unusually of these ventures.

The artists exhibiting in this exhibition (Neil Clements, Laura Cooper, Patrick Jameson, Kevin Pollock and Victoria Skogsberg) all are currently based in Scotland, but they have more than this in common. The work presented in After Human is, as the title suggests after human; a machine like accuracies and attention to detail is present and an almost anti human approach to the creative process. If it was not for the two female artists who bring a subtle performative aspect, that hints to humanity but with a repetitive nature that again hollows out the process of creating as something formulaic. Despite each artwork’s accuracy they are based around humans and production, as if seen by the eye of someone/thing that is trying to be outside of human.

The show has been impressively put together and there is a mechanical accuracy that crosses into the presentation from the works themselves. The cold preciseness of the show has the power to alienate its audience but yet the allure of aesthetic perfection creates a stark yet beautiful space.
