Gentler Passion

1 - 30 June 2013 * Coming soon

Kim Walker presents a sound installation exploring the architectural forms surrounding hand-made sheds that pigeon fanciers build for their racing pigeons. Dookits or Doocots are structures constructed of wood or scrap metal and are used to house pigeons. Within Scotland there are structural remnants reflecting the traditions of rearing and keeping pigeons for racing and leisure. This tradition was prevalent in Europe and notably, within urban environments of Scotland. Gentler Passion was generously supported by the Scottish Sculpture Workshop's (SSW) Winter Residency program 2013 and has been selected as part of Aberdeen City Council's bid program for UK City of Culture 2017.

The Ark Centre

Resonance

29 April - 13 June 2013

Art In The Ark, is proud and excited to present a new selection of artwork by 21 professional artists, to be displayed for seven weeks in the public spaces at The Ark Centre in Basingstoke. The exhibition will include painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media pieces with works on display mainly in the Foyer, Atrium and BlueCafeBar. The show runs from 29th April 2013 to the 13th June 2013. All artwork will be available for sale, with each artist donating a proportion of that sale to the Ark Medical trust.  In January the Ark put out another open call to creatives across the country. Artists were invited to consider the title ‘Resonance’, a term with a particular scientific meaning whilst also describing a more personal connection with the viewer. The result is a very diverse range of art with some outstanding techniques on show. Winchester artist Kate Theodore’s Picasso-esque wanderings with the brush particularly stand out, Nadja Gabriela Plein’s new vibrant watercolours lie somewhere between the loose style of Matisse and the solidity of Peter Doig’s Landscapes, whilst David H Jones channels the intensity of Barnett Newman in his deep blue acrylic paintings. The full list of featured artists can be found on the Art in the Ark Blog.

JIM HOWIESON'S ONE MAN SHOW

17 May - 15 June 2013

Jim Howieson's work deals with the modification and re-configuration of commonplace structures and objects. Predominantly these activities take place out in the world; in public spaces such as galleries, showrooms and leisure centres. Howieson's physical actions and playful responses to these differing environments act as a starting point for a series of comedic visual and physical dramas between people and things to unfold. Jim Howieson's One Man Show sees Howieson focussing on his recent work in a cabinet maker's workshop and his concurrent, unsuccessful attempts at aligning his practice with a conventional artist studio model. In celebration of this recent activity, Howieson has constructed a single sculptural monument using his now superfluous studio furniture as material. This monument will be supported by a bespoke, revolving plinth which will allow the viewer to alter its orientation and affect.

Through

18 April - 2 June 2013

neo:studios  presents 'Through', an exhibition of works by invited artists and neo:associates whose practice involves process. Within the neo:2012 - 2013 series of collaborations with practitioners from a wider artist community. 'Through' - of a route or journey - features work employing an eclectic range of media. The 'process' in process art refers to the process of the formation of art: the gathering, sorting, collating, associating, patterning and moreover the initiation of actions and proceedings. Process art is concerned with the actual doing and how actions can be defined as an actual work of art; seeing the act of making art as its primary expression. Therefore art is viewed as a creative journey or process, rather than as a deliverable or end product. A number of the artists have elected to continue the 'doing' to create exciting new works especially for the event. This includes works that will be in a state of 'becoming' in the gallery space for the duration of the exhibition. For further details contact:jason@neoartists.co.uk
