The Sporting League

By: Marc Renshaw

The Sporting League is a notional super football league created by Marc Renshaw. Formed in 1985 , The Sporting League has continued to thrive as an amalgamation of a previously fragmented league world.  Teams such as ‘Athletico’, ‘Tranquilayers’, ‘Delta’ and ‘Bayerns’ could be considered as the eternal ‘big guns’. However,  smaller clubs such as  Olby and Novia have gained momentum in recent seasons.

The league is currently located in the 2006-2007 season.

Sporting League Game 19

Novia were dominant in their 3-1 win which was previously predicted by the bookies to be a score draw against Bombaya.

Zindustrious have confirmed that they're going to quit The Sporting League at the end of the season whether they end up relegated or not. Their chief executive has said that  'league politics' was the reason. Pacifica were the latest side to turn them over with a 1-0 win at the Pacificos stadium.

Champions Olby were stunned at home by Indentine - it now looks impossible for them to have any chance of regaining their title.

Athletico made hard work of their match against Colne eventually running out with a deserved 2-1 win.

Metronova would have liked to have given their new owners something to celebrate but couldn't keep up with an aggressive Bayerns.

Delta won 3-0 against Dons but they're still a shadow of the team that dominated Sporting football in the seasons 2000, 2001 and 2002. Time passes...

News just in...Lunderbach have booted out the toffs from their board room and have handed back power to the Matzburgh family.

They  left Green Tree choking on their green tea with a convincing 3-2 win.

Sporting league game 18: News in brief.

Athletico triumphed against Chamber Athlete in a much anticipated derby match. The Athleticans were able to call upon their senior players with two inspired substitutions in the second half which resulted in an 85th minute wonder strike by their number 2 player.

Olby again proved too strong for a depleted Delta securinga 2-1 win. It proved to be quite a bizarre encounter with the Olby manager sent off for doing a walking handstand across the pitch in celebration of his sides winning goal.

Bayerns played some truly inspiration football as they routinely turned over 16th placed Indentine. Bayerns are now firmly placed in third position and their demanding coach believes that they'll almost certainly be in pole position come what May.

Red Star lost a bit of ground after the Pacifica midfield deadened the game - preventing Red Star from playing their usual self assured football.

Tranquilayers came back from a goal down with a comprehensive 3-1 victory over a jaded Green Tree.

Game 17: News in brief...

The Bayerns no 1 player has officially left the club after a major falling out with the chairman. Details about the reasons are sketchy at the moment but it is believed that a culture of bullying within the backroom staff could harbour a clue.

The news comes after Bayerns won 3-0 against Delta with the player in question scoring two of the three goals. The rumour mill also suggests that a move to current league leaders Novia on a free transfer is imminant.

Bolsov and Dons have been hit flush on their respective chins after all the players picked up injuries in a fractious 2-2 draw.

Leaders Novia were held 1-1 against Green Tree. The Novia coach insisted that the current squad are strong enough to win the title and there's no cash left in the bank for any big signings unless they win the league.

Red Star have now moved two points behind  Delta after a last gasp penalty goal against Lunderbach. Red Star have been keen to distance themselves from the recent negative publicity around the clubs 'drinking culture.' PR company Meniscus solutions have been drafted in to restore the professional 'workmanlike' values of the club.

Indentine dominated against Tranquilayers but still went down by two goals to one. The win was Tranquilayers 10th league win in a row - a club record which has more than made up for their tentative start to the season.

Athletico have still only lost one game this season despite not getting out of 2nd gear as their reserves won 1-0 against Pacifica.

Pacifica have been given 72 hours to find funding to prevent the administrators setting up camp at the Coasta stadium. There have been suggestions that a merger with Universo Collunteen could well be on the cards.

Game 16: Summary.

Tranquilayers have now recorded their 9th consecutive win - the first time since their title winning season 1986-87.

Novia won the battle against champions Olby.Novia are now 4 points clear at the summit and were dominant against a tame Olby side whose chances of retaining the title have all but diminished.

Metronova moved up into 6th position after a comfortable 2-0 win over Delta. It now seems a long time since Delta beat Metro to win the first of their turn of the century titles from the year 2000.

Bayerns won at a struggling Pacifica despite fielding a reserve squad.

The Sporting 8 convention begins next week with the Bayerns region as hosts for the illustrious event. It is expected that there will be a large presence of Universo collunteen supporters to meet delegates in protest at the Bayerns municipalen. Collunteen have been  continually refused access back into the league after 20 years of trouble with their fan base.

News in brief...

Novia suffered their 2nd defeat of the season to a full strength Chamber Athlete. Chamber, who were one of the favourites at the start of the season have found the kind of form that the bookies originally backed them for a top 3 finish.

Champions Olby steadied the ship with a convincing 4-2 win over injury hit Liver Halvers. Two consecutive victories has moved them within 7 points of the leaders.

Bayerns recorded their third win in a row against Pacifica. They now move into the top 2 and are the bookies new favourites for the title.

The Alderbaren consortium have had their latest appeal for control of the Bayerns estate rejected. The municipal convention voted 748-687 against the motion.

Game 14 Update: In brief...

Pacifica have fallen into deeper trouble as champions Olby were 2-1 victors and clung onto their outsider chances of regaining the title.

Chamber Athlete are a team worthy of the top 5, so it's strange to see them down in 12th place. A 1-0 win over rivals Metronova eased their worries for this week at the very least.

Novia and Athletico ended up playing out a predictable stalemate which finished 0-0.

Red Star are getting stronger as they edged closer to the leaders Novia with a 3-1 win over Bolsov.

The Tranquilayers district is currently in the throes of a flu pandemic, but this didn't stop their resurgent team winning 3-1 on their travels to Bombaya...

Bayerns manager believes that his side will be in the running at the end of th season after a convincing 1-0 win over Lunderbach.

Olby threw away a 2 goal lead against Athletico leaving the champion's season in disarray. The Athletico boss has said that the introduction of their youth academy has impacted positively as they remain firmly in the top 3.

Tranquilayers leap-frogged over Liver Halvers and push on in their target for a top 3 finish.

Chamber Athlete were comfortable 2-0 winners over cash strapped Muno. Athlete are on the verge of an investment deal which their chairman believes will bring them the Sporting League title within 3 years.

Novia struggled against lowly Pacifica but managed to hold onto their top spot in spite of an inspired revival by the opposition.

Red Star are the in form side with a 5-1 thumping of Zindustrious. Will they be top in May for the 1st time since 1990? Time will tell...

Metronova scored early to draw level on points with Liver Halvers.  The home team dominated proceedings against a Halvers side that just couldn’t seem to get out of the starting blocks. Novia continue their ‘dog with a bone’ policy by strengthening their grip at the top with a 3-1 win at the intimidating Dons stadium.  Play was halted after 19 minutes due to a pitch invasion from Dons supporters in protest against the clubs rising gate fees. The youth of Red Star choked out ailing champions Olby with a convincing 1-0 triumph. Red Star are also in talks with Zindustrious in a potential loan spell for their out of favour winger. Delta and Athletico played out a predictable 1-1 draw. Meanwhile, both teams have been in early talks with Rayinado as they both compete for the Sporting league’s most lucrative sponsorship deal.

There was a much needed return from injury for Colne’s number one player. He practically snuffed out every attacking opportunity that the Athletico outfit made. The Athletican boss was very unhappy with a last minute penalty appeal…Olby are said to be seeking new financial investment after a 1-1 stalemate with Bayerns - a game that they dominated until the last five minutes of play…Green Tree’s boss believes that Red Star will finish in the top two for the first time since 1990 – ‘They’re so young, I can see them dominating the league the same way Delta did at the turn of the century.’ Bombaya completely dominated at home to Lunderbach, missing a hatful of opportunities before getting an injury time winner.

The Sporting League federation is currently investigating a series of financial irregularities along the coast of Pacifica. The club maintain that they have no connections with the ongoing list of negative headlines coming from the area.

# 2 [4 August 2009]

Delta made a remarkable comeback against a stunned Colne side. They’ve now recorded a fourth straight victory after an uncertain start to the season…Bayerns had to hold on against a typically stubborn Bombaya after having two players sent off for dissent early in the second half…Liver Halvers have gained a new sponsorship deal with Alfreda solutions after their 3-1 demolition of an ailing Bolsov side…Tranquilayers win again despite fielding a weakened team against Industrious...Champions Olby had to dig deep to gain a slender advantage against a tough Dons outfit…Novia extend their lead at the summit with an edgy performance at Muno...
