a-n is the largest artists’ membership organisation in the UK with over 21,000 members.
We support artists and those who work with them in many practical ways, acting on behalf of our membership and the visual arts sector to improve artists’ livelihoods.
We have a reputation for providing compelling insights and playing a catalytic role in influencing and informing cultural policy.
Through advocacy and information and from the perspective of artists, a-n’s mission is to stimulate and support contemporary visual arts practice and affirms artists’ value in society.
As an organisation we stand by and demonstrate our beliefs – valuing artists in society, embracing experimentation, stimulated when change is generated through dialogue and interaction.
The a-n team
a-n is a distributed organisation with offices in Newcastle and London and staff based remotely around the UK and in Europe. Many staff are part time, with 58% practising artists.

Founded in 1980, a-n The Artists Information Company is a non-profit-distributing limited company.

As an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation 2015-2018, a-n receives grant aid amounting to 25% of income, augmenting 75% from sales of membership, subscriptions, advertising and services.
