Paying Artists aims to secure fair payment for artists who exhibit in publicly-funded galleries.

The Paying Artists Campaign was launched in 2014 to secure payment for artists who exhibit in publicly-funded galleries, and was developed with support from 2,000 artists, curators, funders, arts producers, museums, galleries, local authorities and other public commissioners.

a-n’s Exhibition Payment Guide, first published in 2016 provides advice for agreeing exhibition payments for the benefit of the whole sector: for organisations to establish best practice, for artists to sustain their careers and so audiences can see art that reflects the full spectrum of human experience.

In 2023 a-n will refresh its Exhibition Payment Guide, expanding it to cover best practice in commissioning a broad range of artistic work, and will publish a new Code of Practice to support relationships between artists and commissioners.
