In February 2011, innovative artist’s network Figure Ground invited 20 artists to explore LV21, a decommissioned Lightship on the Kent coast. Thanks to funding from Arts Council England, the artists are collaborating to make exciting new work in response to the space, which will be opened up to the public on 20th April. Visitors will be able to share in the process, see the work, and discuss views on public art with the artists. LV21 has a fascinating history and is in the process of being restored as a space for contemporary art and cultural events. The artists, who come from all over the UK, will be working with sound, light, radio waves, installation, film, and performance. The Figure Ground core group will also be hosting a ‘public art debate’ with invited guests from the public art commissioning sector. The residency and events are an opportunity for artists who want to work in the public realm to meet and creatively debate key issues relating to their practice.
