Residences come in all sorts of guises: lasting from weeks, months to even years; offering time for research or intense periods of productivity; from private studio-based activity to public engagement – all hosted by a variety of public and commercial galleries and even non-art venues. Chaired by artist Kelly Large, this seminar will explore the proliferation of artist-in-residence models in art institutions over the last decade and their current value in the development of new and emerging practices. Together, artists and organisations will question to what extent artist-in-residence structures reflect recent shifts in production from studio-centred practices to post-studio practices such as socially-engaged, performative or process-led.The Artists' Studio at The New Art Gallery Walsall will provide both the location and the starting point for the discussion and the following guest speakers will be further examining the complexities of revealing an artist's process to a viewing public in a gallery setting: Marion Coutts (Artist), Kevin Reid (Artist), Ben Roberts (Camden Arts Centre), Matthew Walmsley (Berwick Gymnasium and Art Gallery).Organised in partnership with The Art House, Wakefield.
