Join internationally-acclaimed artists Ackroyd & Harvey for a lively evening talk at Kings Lynn Town Hall, to hear the story of the new oak circle at Harding’s Pits and what it means for the local community. Ackroyd & Harvey will be joined by associate artist Johann Don-Daniel and composer Stevie Wishart of Greenland Music, and the evening will be chaired by Veronica Sekules, Director of GroundWork Gallery.
Background to the event
On Tuesday 4th March 2025, British artists Ackroyd & Harvey planted a circle of seven oaks on Harding’s Pits
public space in partnership with GroundWork Gallery and supported by Harding’s Pits Community Association and Borough Council King’s Lynn & West Norfolk.
The circle is part of a national art project that celebrates the cultural, biological and climatic significance of trees in a rapidly urbanising world, and is inspired by German artist Joseph Beuys’ environmental artwork 7000 Oaks: City Forestation Instead of City Administration.
In 1982, Beuys planted oaks across Kassel, Germany, in an effort to reconnect the community to nature, after the city was heavily bombed in the second world war and rapidly reconstructed. He chose oak for its longevity and connection with ancient Celtic folklore.
Through the Beuys’ Acorns oak circle, King’s Lynn will be connected with other cultural centres including Sainsbury Centre in Norwich, Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham and Eden Project in Boldeva, Cornwall who are hosting circles of oaks too, amongst other partnerships in development.
