“In the early hours of 15th April 1919, the mine laying submarine U118 seized from the Imperial German Navy broke free of its hawser and washed ashore on Hastings beach. Many photographers documented this improbable event and postcards attest to the public’s fascination with this wrecked vessel and its popularity as a tourist attraction. A photograph attributed to Paul Thompson caught my eye and became the focus for my project at The SPACE”.
