“The word chaos …is now used to describe the behaviour of certain mathematical mappings and physical phenomena that at first glance seem to behave in a random or disorderly fashion but actually have an underlying element of order”. (Anton & Rorres, 1994: 717) It is this contradiction that has lead artists Arlene Shorthose and Sophia Vincent to develop visual representations that play on the interactions between chaos and order. Through the use of mathematical models that search for order in random patterns, to the interpretation of random events to define an ordered system, the works on display explore the idea of order or chaos, chaos or order. Arlene’s series of hand drawn records methodically record the position of windfall apples around an apple tree. The use of graph paper to record the random scattering of apples lends an air of mathematical rigor that attempts to mask the chaotic process on which it is based. The link to mathematics continues as the mathematical model employed by Vincent reflects both chaos and order within our capitalist system and attempts to provide a visual realization of the repetitive nature of society’s enslavement – to work, to produce, to consume.
