A pop up art exhibition of fused glass will take place from 14th to 21st June (9am – 5pm) at the Show Off Gallery, 13 Harbour St, Whitstable (CT5 1AQ).  Members of the Contemporary Glass Society have curated the collection for Whitstable to coincide with South East Open Studios, an annual event which celebrates artists and art in all its forms.

International glass artist, Peter Layton will also be exhibiting pieces from his London gallery.

The pop up exhibition is limited to one week only, so visitors are warmly invited to pop in to the pop up to find out more about this exciting art medium before the collection moves to another venue.

“I enjoy the process of melting glass into different forms using techniques such as fusing, slumping, pâte de verre, screen-printing and kiln-carving. Sometimes I use decorative fused glass in stained glass panels with copper foiling or lead work.  For the past two years I have been involved with The Stevens Competition supported by the Worshipful Company of Glaziers. I have also exhibited at Ely Cathedral.”

“Glass is my inspiration. I love the way it holds colour and light and the potential it has for making incredible shapes, its great strength and beauty. My artwork is very material based and glass has become the central focus to my creative practice. My initial inspirations to make art come from various sources, magic, quantum physics, metaphysics, music and nature.  Awards include World Skills Silver Medallist 2013 Architectural Glass and Stevens Prize 2010 Commendation.”

“My work in glass began in 2012 with traditional stained glass – learning to conceive a workable design and developing the engineering skills to cut glass accurately and then assemble the piece using lead, cement and soldering. Using this technique, I made window and door panels, lampshades using Tiffany-style copper foiling and I experimented with 3D multi-media work using wire, wood, stone and glass.

From leadwork I moved on to fusing glass in the heat of a kiln.  This has taught me how to drop hot glass though a ring to form a vase, slumping glass into various shaped molds and exploring how to add inclusions between layers of glass i.e. gold leaf, copper, wire and paint powders.”

“As a professional engineer, I’ve often admired the craftsmanship and artistry of stained glass windows seen in cathedrals and churches, along with glass items viewed in shops and markets around the world.  Having retired from the arena of Radiation & Radiotherapy Physics engineering, I am now trying to emulate that craftsmanship, while fulfilling a long-held desire to work with glass, wood, and stone. The engineering skills acquired many years ago as an apprentice Precision Instrument Maker help me produce pieces of work in these substances which, I hope, match the quality of the wonderful glass panels, and objet d’art, I have so long admired. My aim is to produce pieces of work, both large and small, that are liked and admired by others for the quality of the finished article and, hopefully, for either their artistry, or their expression of fun.”

“My journey of creativity has been through many changes since completing my degree in Three Dimensional Design at WSCAD. I studied casting; liquid to solid, positive and negative shapes exploring forms.  Creativity, through teaching became my world until I discovered fused glass.

I see the world through colour and pattern, using drawing, collage and photography as the vehicles to help visualise my ideas.  I use a range of techniques which bring out the texture and colour of the glass. I am drawn to the nature of the heat and all that changes within the kiln. The use of plaster and how this can add to the surface and depth of the piece intrigues my creative thoughts.”

“I’ve always been a creative person and have pursued many media from textiles, to print and paint. Often combining these as mixed media pieces.

However, after studying at the University of Creative Arts, Maidstone, I discovered my interest for 3D art forms. This lead me into the wonderful world of ceramics, silversmithing and glass.

My favourite media are watercolour and glass, having discovered the similarities between them….. principally the use of light, colour and experimental textures.

My style has become increasingly free, vibrant and expressive. I love using the wonderful properties of transparent glass to great effect. My inspiration usually comes from Nature having a lifelong passion for Sustainability.

I have exhibited my glass at The National Stained Glass Museum, Ely; Contemporary Glass Society’s Glourious Glass Exhibition, Maidstone and The Worshipful Company of Glaziers at Glaziers Hall, London.

I have created a number of new pieces that I’m really excited about for this Whitstable Exhibition.”
