After an amazing 25th Anniversary year, what does 2023 have in store for the Contemporary Glass Society?  Well, CGS was asked by its members to provide more regional events so throughout the year we are taking contemporary glass into communities around the country through a series of Discovery Days which are open to all and located in inspiring locations.

At the Discovery Day explore and meet an amazing melange of glass artists talking about their work and life as contemporary glass artists. It is a chance to interact with professional creatives and to find out more about working within the creative industries. It’s also an intimate insight into an unknown and exciting world, meeting and making new contacts with glass artists local to you.

The programme for our day at the Hepworth Wakefield includes 4 fascinating speakers, combining both well established artists and young emerging makers. One of these speakers is an international artist, joining us virtually by Zoom. We are providing some of the best of the world’s contemporary glass artists straight to your local centre to excite and inspire everyone.

Glass artists attending each day have the opportunity to “Show and Tell”, bringing along a piece of their work and explaining the techniques and ideas behind it.  Some of our venues provide demonstrations whilst others the change to explore and experience beautiful artwork.

Our Discovery Day in Wakefield includes exploring the beautiful galleries and glorious gardens surrounding the gallery  plus mini demonstrations of glass making live! You are also able to meet real glass artists and hear them talk about their work and techniques. The day also offers the great pleasure to be found in meeting and networking with likeminded lovers and makers of contemporary glass!

A Discovery Day offers participants the chance to explore the collaboration between heritage crafts and modern technology and to appreciate the value of glass not only as an artistic material but also its technical, scientific, historical and geographical importance.  The day highlights how glass is working towards gaining green credentials.

The day is organised by the Contemporary Glass Society, the UK’s leading charity promoting contemporary glass art and supporting and nurturing contemporary glass artists. (www.cgs.org.uk). This Discovery Day aims to enlighten and enthuse participants to the potential of either simply enjoying contemporary glass or deciding to take it one step further and start working with glass yourself!

Our speakers are:

  • Joanna Manousis: a British–American artist working in glass and mixed media sculpture.
    • David Reekie: an internationally renowned glass artist specialising in lost wax cast glass who reflects on the human condition.
    • Jahday Ford: a Glass Artist and Designer from Bermuda but currently based in Manchester who specialises in hot glass fabrication and mould design.
    • Kristiina Uslar: a glass artist from Estonia who works mainly in pâte de verre

Tickets cost £45 which includes all the day’s events, refreshments and lunch. Tickets can be purchased at Eventbrite:
