This touring exhibition is a major survey of contemporary UK enamelling. While this rare and exciting medium is seen as specialised today, it uses a relatively simple process which has its roots in industrial metalwork. Amazing results are achieved from a basic technique of kiln-firing ground coloured glass onto a base such as gold, silver, copper, steel or aluminium. Out of this come other processes, for example liquid enamelling, which allow the artist to produce a vast range of objects and art forms from the tiny and exquisite to sculptural jewellery and even large-scale work for walls. There is also a special quality to the colours in enamel art, which are unique to this medium and promise unlimited content, imagery or dimension, all of which are demonstrated in Playing with Fire. ADMISSION FREE.
