‘To be enchanted is to be struck and shaken by the extraordinary that lives amid the familiar and the everyday’. Jane Bennett

The degree show is the culmination of a two year programme, Art Society Nature, which has attracted established and emerging artists to learn, experiment, play, question and make together. The exhibition will take place at The Margate School, an independent liberal arts school on Margate High Street which was established in 2019.

The exhibition Enchanted Things explores the connecting threads between each student’s practice as well as their response to the theme of Art Society Nature. Curated by the artists, the exhibition encompasses shared interests in transformation, movement, surprise, senses and play. The seven artists work across sculpture, drawing, film, sound, performance and photography where found objects, textile, natural and everyday materials are central.

The word Enchanted comes from the Latin root incantare, ‘to cast a spell on’, as well as from French enchanter ‘to sing’. A spell is a repetition of words that comes from somewhere unknown and causes something to happen or appear. For us, enchantment lies in the transformative act of making and the alchemy in creating and breathing life into new forms, fragments coming together.

Enchantment goes beyond the material world, it is the moment of being touched, transformed or moved, by something. It is our response to the world in all its complexity, wonder and strangeness.

The artists will be available during gallery opening hours and the exhibition will be accompanied by workshops as well as works being available at the Enchanted Shop.

The Margate School is an independent not-for-profit postgraduate liberal arts school that has become a hub for innovation and creativity in the town of Margate. Our theme of Art Society Nature aims to provide a socially engaged and sustainability-driven programme, delivered through knowledge sharing, collaboration and co-creation, peer-to-peer learning, and sharing of space and technical facilities.
