From Paris to Hillsborough! Cupola Contemporary Art (Cupola Gallery) is delighted to welcome back Paris based French artist Francis Berthault for his second solo show at Cupola. “These wonderfully painted, idiosyncratic, joyful paintings raise your spirits and often bring an involuntary smile to your face.” Karen Sherwood, Proprietor Francis’s work is acrylic on paper or canvas, using a bright and vibrant colour palette, often associated with the hot Mediterranean climate the British rarely experience! Rich reds, deep and aqua blues, orange, emerald green & golden yellows sear out of these canvases with a vibrancy and depth normally associated with oil painting. Landscape (mountains, seascapes, houses and farm land) is often the basis of the images but animals do have a tendency to appear with often quite distinct and anthropomorphic personalities as well as highly stylized figures. The title of this exhibition Tapis Volants (flying carpets) seems to refer to Francis’s new style of representing these landscapes with flatted perspective and richly coloured segmented sections which are reminiscent of woven Arabic rugs, but with the added ‘magical’ element which every flying carpet needs. http://francisberthault.ifrance.com/
