Mudras signify a gesture. They are a symbol that can act as a seal to engage and influence our bodies and minds. Mudras can be used to communicate dramas through dance and can assist in the telling of stories. The hands can be considered a mirror to our body and our mind, as we frequently use gestures in unconscious ways to seal a thought. Gestures traverse the margins of verbal language, helping us to express our feelings and underline our actions.
Inspired by a Rabari embroidery made in Kutch, Gujarat and Odissi Classical dance gestures, the exhibition will feature work from the Neesa Well Women’s group (Manchester), Bondhon and Boundary Women’s Group (Tower Hamlets). The exhibition title ‘Drawing Mudras: a Practice of care,’ brings together artists Sarah Lawton and Elena Catalano and women from the South Asian Diaspora, living in East London to share through an exploration of hand gestures and the development of artists’ books, how each woman cares for her families’ health and happiness.
During the preview event at Rich Mix on 2nd May 6.30pm, Sarah Lawton will lead in a performative drawing event, which focuses on Sanskrit gesture and movement. Participants will learn about the connection between gesture and embodied movement to create their own contribution and artwork.
Group workshops are open daily 10.30am-12.30pm and 1.20pm – 3pm.
