ESA commissioned artists to celebrate Leeds/Dortmund twinning anniversary. This participatory installation forms a part of ESA’s contribution to Light Night. This new commission by ESA will be presented at 42 New Briggate where, over two weeks, the artists will reconstruct a church and invite its congregation to participate in this former shop unit. The space will become a ‘shopel’ (chapel+shop) where consumers will be able to buy ‘religious’ objects made by the artists from recycled materials while surrounded by an ambient sound environment. The installation will be at once playful and critical, creating awareness of the changes within society’s social and ethical values and the switch from ‘collective’ to ‘competitive thinking’. Audiences and passers by will be invited to observe the construction process, take part in the daily shopping sessions and see the final exhibition including extended opening on Light Night. For more information about the artists’ work please visit: www.kattke.de / www.kalinkacoast.de
