INDEX is delighted to present 2011 Salon Art Prize winner Helen Kincaid for its latest exhibition. Kincaid’s mesmerising paintings draw on found photographic images, depicting both the monumental and the miniature, the galactic and the domestic.Executed with a captivating subtlety, Kincaid’s paintings are mysterious, mute and utterly compelling. In their different ways Figurines and Asteroids share a melancholic trace of a moment past. A moment now blurred, distorted and fading into obscurity.“My paintings occupy a position somewhere between still life and the moving image,” Kincaid has said. “They explore this idea of instability by emphasising a moment of dissolution or emergence… The slow dissolve, the drift into invisibility, the moment of fracturing, both physical and psychological, suggests the ‘sublime terror’ of being extinguished.”Paul Hobson, director of the Contemporary Art Society, said of her work: “The paintings evoke the idea of memory and history in a way that is reminiscent of artists such as Gerhard Richter, but on a more domestic and intimate scale.”Kincaid is a founding director of INDEX. She studied Fine Art (BA degree) in Brighton and Barcelona (MA degree) and has exhibited in Britain, Europe and North America.Figurines and Asteroids is curated by freelance curator Grace Davies.
