Lionel Horsnell was a well known Hertford artist and indeed Courtyard Arts became his ‘second home’. He painted and socialised at the art centre over many years and made many friends. Loinel died at the end of last year aged 79. Courtyard Arts is holding a retrospective exhibition of his work from Jan 10 to 21. The exhibition is an extensive collection of his watercolours and drawings from a long period and includes local landscapes in and around Hertford as well as scenes from Yorkshire, Lancashire and various European destinations. Much of the work has been framed especially for the exhibition, and other work is shown unframed. Some work is borrowed from local businesses. In addition there is a collection of pencil drawings and oil paintings of Lionel himself, mostly by his father but also by his sister. The portraits here show Lionel as a young man along with a more recent portrait in his later years. In addition to our normal opening times, there is an Open Afternoon at Courtyard Arts on Sunday January 15 from 2 – 4pm when refreshments will be served and visitors are welcome to come and view Lionel’s work and to share memories of his life.
