The artist writes: ‘Having spent many years exploring my ideas through stitched textiles, I began to feel that, for me, textiles should be used for practical purposes. My work was delicate and better behind glass which rather defeated the object of creating textural surfaces so I turned to paint but after a while I missed the quality of thread and the depth of colour that can be achieved. Seeing an exhibition of woven tapestries from the Ramses Wissa Wassef Art centre and discovering the Handweavers Studio, then in Walthemstow set me off on a new path of discovery. Tapestry weaving gave me the thrill of textiles and pattern but also the opportunity to approach it in a more painterly way. Tapestries are robust–they don’t need to be behind glass–you can hoover them off if they get dusty!’
