In 2018 Helen Scalway curated an exhibition in London called If We Were Houses. This experimental exhibition took as its starting point the metaphor of the built dwelling as an embodiment of the human self. The exhibition sought to open up this idea visually as a means of alternative self-portraiture and a group of artists were invited to present responses to the question, ‘If you were a house, what kind of house would you be?’ Helen then aimed to group the work in the exhibition to explore the complexities of creating a “neighbourhood”.

Helen has been working on these themes for some years and now, a year on from the exhibition, she welcomes the chance to present some of the work and to discuss the implications of her research. She will be showing images from the exhibition and inviting the Blue Monkey artists who took part in it to join her in talking about the work.

Helen Scalway is an artist trained at Chelsea College of Art, UAL. She has a keen interest in spatialities developed over many years as an associate artist within the Geography Departments of Royal Holloway, London University, and Exeter University, and as a teacher of drawing within the Interior Architecture Department at the University of Hertfordshire. Helen is currently occupied in writing about the metaphor of the house as standing for the self. Her exhibition, If We Were Houses was at 5th Base Gallery in Heneage Street, London in 2018.
