The UK premiere of recent and new work by theTurner Prize winner Keith Tyson, the foremost living artist to have emerged from Cumbria. Nature Paintings is a major series of work produced since 2006. None have previously been shown in the UK, and many are being exhibited for the first time. The forms and colours of these paintings are determined by the reactions between specially mixed paints and chemicals, poured at different angles and temperatures onto aluminium or glass surfaces. With Nature Paintings, Tyson departs from traditional methods of representing nature in art by allowing nature itself, rather than the artist’s hand, to guide the development of the work. Keith Tyson was born in Ulverston in 1969. He studied at Barrow-in-Furness College of Engineering, Carlisle College of Art and at the University of Brighton. Since his first major solo exhibition, From the Artmachine, at the Anthony Reynolds Gallery in 1995, Tyson has shown across Europe and the USA and won the Turner Prize in 2002. His work is represented in the Tate and many other important public and private collections internationally.Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery gratefully acknowledges the support of Keith Tyson and the Haunch of Venison, London, in bringing Nature Paintings to Carlisle, and Arts Council England for their financial support through Grants for the Arts.
