Opening on Saturday 13 March, at 2pm, Newcastle Borough Museum & Art Gallery presents a new exhibition by artist Miriam Burke.’Know this Place for the First Time’ is an exhibition inspired by the local landscape of North Staffordshire and its intriguing history under snow, ice and glaciers 18,000 years ago.Miriam has been working with glacier scientists at Keele University for 18 months on an innovative art and science collaboration in order to produce this exhibition. Taking inspiration from the T S Eliot poem Little Gidding, Miriam’s research for this exhibition has taken her from a cold laboratory at Keele university to a trip to the glaciers of south east Iceland in order to inform and inspire this exhibition. It is ran in conjunction with ‘Inspirational Landscapes’, a geography module at Keele University which explores relationships between the physical geographical environment and human creativity in both science and popular culture. It examines the ways in which the physical landscape has been an inspiration to both artists and scientists and the contrasting representations of landscape in science and in cultural media such as literature, film and music.Using both scientific data and artistic processes, this exhibition presents a cross disciplinary exploration of the effects that a changing climate has on our familiar landscape. This is an Arts Council England funded exhibition.
