Drawing is the starting point for a new body of work by Laura Hudson. Landscapes of a sort, these evocations in paint are inspired by the land from North Devon to the Cornish coast.

Sketching on the spot or travelling through or from the memory of a place she has just been Laura’s drawings are quick notations. In the time and space between sketching on the road and painting in the studio something happens and the feeling of place comes to dominate. Perception, like memory, is subjective. Past, present and future concertina, as one thing becomes closer than another.

In the process of painting, accumulated fragments inhabit a borderland between figuration and abstraction. Composite journeys, rooted in the language of remembered land, travel in waves through the picture plane as the surface is encoded in time.
