This exhibition comes from the advent of winning the inaugural Periscope Award from the Pavilion Open Art Exhibition 2015, awarded to an exceptional artist exhibiting at Penarth Pier Pavilon for the first time; awarded by the selectors Bob Gelsthorpe (Artist/ Exhibitions Coordinator, Penarth Pier Pavilion) and Sheridan Ward (Independent Artist). Jones was selected for an inventive boldness of approach, with the attraction to her practice coming from her transitory works, hovering around intuition, observation and evocation. Jones’ work has a quiet calligraphy to it, with the tentative first marks setting the rhythm for the whole painting the stylized depiction of objects, images, memories and environments that can be read, analysed, dissected and discussed, but has a beauty in its readability.

Initially an investigation into the painterly manifestation of memory, Lucia’s practice begins as an exploration into its transient and changeable nature. A memory is never the same when revisited, being subject to change and alteration through associative and emotional influence. Using found images, objects, film stills and her own memories, the paintings she creates allude to this sensibility. The prevalence of paint’s material capabilities has since transcended the subject matter of memory, reducing it to but a starting point from which the painterly process can evolve and envelop the canvas.

Jones’ approach is reactionary and action-inducing, the physical act of painting igniting key exchanges within her work; between source material, herself, paint and the viewer. The immersive process of painting obscuring the line between representation and abstraction within her practice; the works she produces reside on the cusp of both.

To celebrate this new body of work, Lucia Jones will be launching a catalogue at the Painters in Conversation event. Supported by the Oakdale Trust and Arts Council of Wales.
