Lucy Harrison examines the subjective nature of how we experience a particular place, and the effects of memory and nostalgia when a location undergoes change. Remains is a new body of work which explores demolition sites and brings together material from East London, East Germany and the University of Bath campus. Harrison’s work combines photographs, observations and chance encounters with published documents. By drawing on the anecdotal, she builds up alternative histories questioning the notion of historical reliability. Remains marks the first phase of Lucy Harrison’s residency at ICIA, where she investigates the Arts Barn in its last months before demolition making way for the University’s new Arts Complex. A quirky building, the Arts Barn been a space used by students for extra-curricular arts activities for over three decades. By comparing written and oral histories with found material and her own documentation, Lucy aims to provide a fitting memorial for the building. Harrison’s residency will culminate in a second exhibition in the new Arts Complex in 2011. Harrison’s work has been shown internationally including Italy, Holland, Switzerland, Austria, Estonia and Belgium.
