Gluegroup are proud to present M a s t e r S h i f t e r, * an exciting new exhibition of artwork based on the artist collective’s research into the historical traditions of Durham, with a focus on the surrounding social, ceremonial and artistic vestiges of its industrial heritage. The exhibition includes work which takes inspiration from mining banners, the Durham Miners’ Gala and mining machines and offers a contemporary take on the legacy of Durham as a centre for the coal mining industry. Edwin Li and Claire Rowlands are proud to present the work of their first and unique collaboration which takes inspiration from the powerful beauty of mining machines and references Jake and Dinos Chapman’s prints in the nearby exhibit. The work brings together the industrial heritage of Durham with the artistic playfulness of contemporary printmaking and an exciting method of display.*The meaning of ‘MasterShifter’:In mining terms, the person in charge of the mine during the night and who is in charge of the shifters – men who repair the horse-ways and other passages in the mine, and keep them free from obstructions.
