Mythomania features several new large-scale sculptures created from materials including corrugated cardboard, stainless steel, Perspex and artificial leather.

The exhibition includes a 2.5 metre tall cardboard sculpture alluding to Hercules, Donald Trump and Transformers – alongside a Viking helmet inspired by Nike sneakers, Darth Vader and Wonder Woman.

Ian Kirkpatrick – a Canadian artist and graphic designer currently based in Leeds – remixes imagery from the past and present together in order to explore current social and political themes. The surfaces of his pieces are overloaded with iconographies ranging from ancient hieroglyphs to modern logos, which he mashes together into a dialogue about society today – touching on pressing issues such as migration, nationalism and climate change. He’s particularly interested in the ways that familiar themes from mythology – heroes, villains, utopias, and apocalypses – can be found within current media such as television shows, films, news, and social media.

Mythomania is open from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday until 5 October.
