Bristol based artist Sam Barrett graduated from Brighton University in 2009, and has recently exhibited at Art Sydney 2009. His work does not employ traditional painting techniques or subject matter but displays an innovative approach to style and content. Barrett depicts brands from popular culture such as Coca-cola and Gameboy alongside fantastical characters using a variety of techniques and media. Combining oil paint, household varnish, felt tip pens and markers Barrett creates a contrast between fine lines and heavy layers of bright neon colours. Inspired by his childhood memories, this body of work addresses cartoons and advertising and their social impact. “None of the cool kids are doing it” combines symbols and images as diverse as a wooden cross to a pair of hairy legs. Brightly coloured animals, cars, a sandwich with legs, tea cups with faces all jostle for attention on a surface so crowded that the spaces in between things become things themselves. The surreal juxtaposition of the bizarre and the mundane combines to form the impression of a psychedelic photomontage. The public are also invited to attend the opening of “None of the Cool Kids are Doing It” on Fri Feb 5th, 7.30-10pm where there will be live music from Quercus Burlesque, Tony and Cory and Dr.Ted with nibbles and refreshments.
