A solo exhibition of installation & drawings by Sam Clift. The exhibition ‘Obstacle’ demonstrates a culmination of ideas explored by the artist within the past year concerned with space, whether contained within the confines of the picture plane or through the physical intervention of three-dimensional space itself. Through fusing textural material with painterly properties, the sculpture works are able to adapt to their local environment, a function of their previous existence, whilst providing a stimulating visual display of colour and form. Whilst the installations are situated within their local environment, the drawings inhabit an environment of their own. The viewer is cast inward, exploring a fictional world through the textural definitions left by the mark making. Wild and archaic images existing for a moment, until the narrative submerges back into its formal structure. Sam graduated in 2008 from the University for the Creative Arts Farnham in Surrey with a BA honours degree in Fine Art. Since then he has exhibited nationwide throughout the UK, and participated in a touring exhibition in the USA. Sam is currently based in Nottingham where he works as the Exhibition Coordinator at Surface Gallery, where he recently curated the group show ‘Particles, Particles’ and will also be co-curating a group exhibition at the Crypt Gallery, London in August 2009. www.samclift.com
