The ninth year of Open Spaces Open Places features the work of four artists who have been commissioned to make new artworks that will be presented in and around Greyfriars Bus Station, Northampton, in June. Early in 2005, Channel 4 asked the public to nominate the buildings they wanted to see demolished and Greyfriars was in the top 12 nominations that formed the basis of Demolition, their four-part series. In response to this much debated ‘megastructure’ each of the artists has made a new artwork that reflects their individual artistic practices and their particular interest in this controversial public building. As you enter the bus station from Grosvenor Centre, Michael Shaw’s suspended sculpture inflates and deflates in response to its environment. The ebb and flow of everyday journeys is present in this year’s recipient of the University of Northampton’s student bursary, Lisa Berry, whose photographic images trace the pathways people have taken. Jonathan Velardi has transformed an unwelcoming underpass into a ‘blinged-out’ contrast of street style and bourgeois domestic taste. Finally Rich White has constructed a metamorphic survival structure for a building that is continually under the threat of demolition.
