The discussion will cover issues around representation in painting, how painting an image is distinct from photography, and the role of the viewer in reading contemporary works.
The panellists are based in the North and London, and have prominent profiles in contemporary painting – through prizes, exhibitions and lecturing. Lindsey Bull (Manchester) is a Liverpool Biennial Associate Artist and was awarded an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant in 2017. Matthew Krishanu (London) recently had four paintings acquired by the Arts Council Collection, and is included in this year’s John Moores Painting Prize exhibition. Narbi Price (Newcastle) won the Contemporary British Painting Prize in 2017 and is featured in Phaidon’s ‘Vitamin P3’ anthology of contemporary painting (2016). Cara Nahaul (London) has been twice selected for the John Moores Painting Prize show (2018 & 2010) and was a Jerwood Painting Fellow in 2011. The panel is chaired by Dr Judith Tucker (Leeds), senior lecturer, University of Leeds, who was a finalist in the Jackson’s Open Painting Prize 2018, and recently exhibited in the touring exhibition Contemporary Masters from Britain, Jiangsu Art Museum, China, where she gave lectures on British painting and her own practice.
The discussion is from 1.30 – 3pm, with drinks in the gallery after (until 4pm).
