Four polite graphic artists, Jo Fry, Imogen Harvey-Lewis, Micha Leese and Simon Mills, set out to explore their urge to graffiti, and the social bounds that prevent them from doing so. The idea for Polite Graffito was born of a desire to be able to shout – quietly. To graffiti without causing offence, permissive graffiti perverts the primeval call of furtive spray cans. In doing so Polite Graffito places the art of four would be anarchists within a traditional gallery setting. Polite = invisible, removable, small, apologetic, permission, nice, charming, queuing, having good manners, courteous, cultivated, cultured, refined, eloquent and ‘with all due respect’.Graffito = a piece of writing or drawing scribbled, scratched, or sprayed on a surface, stickers, stencils, paste-ups, painting, drawing, scratching, edible or combustible.
