Resting Place: An exhibition inspired by the archive of a First World War Nurse. Visual artist Dawn Cole will be exhibiting her latest body of work. Dawn, who is supported by National Lottery through Arts Council England, is a Kent based artist whose work is made in response to a small family archive belonging to WW1 VAD Nurse, Clarice Alberta Spratling (Dawn’s Great Aunt)Clarice was a young woman who volunteered in 1915 and was posted to France, where she served, in various hospitals, for the duration of WW1. Her archive contains her diary, written during some of her time in France, photographs depicting the hospitals and camps where she worked, a hand written notebook recording her recipes, crochet and knitted lace patterns and remedies for minor ailments along with other personal documents.Dawn has been Artist in Residence at London Printworks since February and this exhibition will feature work produced during this period: work which explores the information and contradictions presented in the archive through a combination of printmaking, textiles and embroidery
