On June 18th 2015, we set sail from Penryn, UK, on board ‘Ezra’, a 44’ Scillonian Pilot Cutter, heading for the Arctic. We visited Scotland, the Faroes and Iceland en route for Ittoqqortoormiit in remote East Greenland. Never having sailed before, I learnt to crew this small, wooden, traditional vessel, whilst recording the journey as official expedition artist. I took photos and sketched life on board and on land. The privilege of seeing the Arctic has changed the way I view the world forever and has had a profound influence on my work. I am still trying to come to terms with the astonishing beauty and fragility of the region and its simultaneous strength and resilience. My talk includes tales of whales, ‘learning the ropes’, navigating around icebergs in the fog and images from the land of the midnight sun…
