‘Small Acts of Detachment’ – An Exhibition by Northampton based Artists A mixed media exhibition featuring work by Jonathan Alibone, Vivienne Dixon, Sarah Hyde, Deborah Louise James, Claire Jarvis, Mark Sibley, Alexander Small and Pauline Wood. LAUNCH EVENING: Thurs Nov14th 2013, 6-8pmDRINKS RECEPTION-ALL WELCOME-FREE ADMISSION The bonds of the past, both historically and personally, persist as phantoms; history is never definitively fixed. Small Acts of Detachment presents a group of Northampton based artists whose individual practices, although diverse, engage with ideas located with time and the past and its corollary memory; conceived here as contingent and fugitive experiences. Collectively the past (the bedrock of culture) is politicised, past narratives are exposed, mythologised and continually revised by their storytellers. The photograph, the memento, the diary or confessional, expose the power of memory to bridge the gap between past and present and its rich wealth of knowledge framed by cultural value, fantasy, belief and desire. As well as the University of Northampton, Collective Collaborations, NN Gallery, and the Central Museum and Art Gallery; ‘Small Acts of Detachment’ is intended to demonstrate that Northampton both produces and sustains contemporary art practice. The demand for studio space in the town remains strong. It is hoped this exhibition, in collaboration with CC, will help continue to raise the profile of the visual arts in Northampton.
