Starting A Creative Buisness
This ArtMakers panel discussion will involve Sophie Berger a member of Kigbeare Studio & Gallery, Okehampton, artist Sharon Gale of Westward Ho! and Illustrator Claire Coker. Covering everything from registering self-employed through making, to marketing, and creating sales.
Sophie’s recent work has been greatly influenced by her move to Devon and a new-found love of Dartmoor. She often sketches on the North moors, and in Skaigh woods. Her next stage is to recapture these sketches using oil paint when back at her studio at Kigeare Studios and Gallery. Sophie teaches oil painting workshops, and will soon start wood carving/printing workshops.
Sharon Gale is a mixed media artist and one half of ‘Quiet British Accent’ an artist duo based in Westward Ho! and known for their #pennydrops, hand painted pre-decimal pennies left stuck to walls. The pennies feature contemporary messages on Victorian coins and placed in the environment. Each penny is documented in its location with a photograph which becomes part of the artwork. Sharon was also recently a part of the Prison Residencies group show, based at Shepton Mallet Prison, Sharon’s artwork consists of two C19th style prison aprons, made from an antique, workman’s linen smock.
Claire’s art life began during a course of art therapy in 2012 and continued from here until gaining her degree in Illustration in 2017, from Plymouth University. She has a passion for wildlife, in particular, marine animals.Her aim is to capture the wide range of life in her illustrations and bring an awareness to these beautiful and, sometimes bizarre looking, animals.
