The relocation of this year’s show follows the departure of the course from the Psalter Lane Campus to the University’s City Campus; an arrival that did not go unnoticed. Great homage was paid to the young artists when various arenas of debate where opened by the University offering a renegotiation of art education; from the conditions in which art is pro-duced; to the contribution of art to the University and the city itself. Debates of the latter are not new. In book X of Plato’s The Republic Socrates banishes the artists and poets claiming that art’s puissance could bear the facade of knowledge and wisdom where none exists; fearing her charm would be great enough to actually nourish the worst attributes of the soul. Regretting the loss, Socrates invites any argument that may be capable of showing art’s worth in a city that venerates law, logic and truth; extending this invite to those who are better equipped to address the philosophers and the civic-minded. For the Fine Art students, the debate has culminated in the final presentation to the University (assuming the form of The City Gates) before they must leave and prove their worth to the city. To assist the students in their task, texts have being provided by Ahuvia Kahane, Ines Weizman, Esther Leslie and Sue Spaid.
