The exhibition features large-scale, figurative, mixed media drawings that explore themes of grief, trauma, maternal love, endurance, and the complex layers of mental health. Drawing on a lifetime of personal experience—including the artist’s own journey through illness and recovery—“Loss and Survival” invites viewers into a haunting yet hopeful world where beauty and pain coexist.
“This work is about more than individual sorrow,” says Suzanna, who worked for decades as a social worker before returning full-time to art. “It’s about the quiet strength that carries us through unspeakable loss, and the enduring human spirit that insists on making meaning from it.”
Referencing Renaissance iconography, spiritual symbolism, and the raw physicality of the human form, Suzanna’s work has been described as “visceral, mythic, and deeply affecting.” At nearly 6 x 9 feet, the centrepiece drawing commands attention with ghostly figures, stretched arms, and the subtle language of colour: grey ash, blood red, and a fragile light breaking through.
Timed to coincide with key national dates around grief and mental health, this exhibition seeks to offer a space for reflection and dialogue. The artist will also be available during select open days for informal conversation and Q&A.
