A unique exhibition of contemporary work explores the North East’s role in the history of the railways taking inspiration from the area’s industrial heritage. ‘Cluster Arts’, comprising Carolyn Corfield, Tish Bloom, Vera Hynes, Michael Kusz with guest artist/photographer Graeme Rowatt work in a range of media which includes sculpture, ceramics, painting, paper collage & film. Carolyn’s mixed media sculpture is influenced by memories of her grandfather, a LNER / BR driver in the 1920’s – 50’s. Incorporating a projection of incandescent flame filmed through a firebox door on location at Tanfield, she alludes to a time as a four year old riding the footplate at the end of her grandfathers shift as he returned the loco to Stockton Shed. The Stephenson Bowl series, inspired by early boiler plate, are a new direction for her ceramics. Their highly tactile ash glazed surfaces resonate with the rusted metal of locomotives awaiting restoration. Free admission and parking.
