The last in our series of three Unfinished Business events in which we’ve presented a tiny sample of the astonishingly diverse art and artists working in East Sussex as part of Blue Monkey Network.

Our Unfinished Business presenter for March is Sheila Hay. Sheila is a ceramic artist who pushes the boundaries of craft and art. Her work has great respect for the traditional craft of ceramics but uses the materials in innovative and unexpected ways. A natural experimenter, her work ranges from the functional to sculptural and installation work.

Sheila has worked and exhibited in Italy and America as well as the U.K. Her work has been exhibited in the East Sussex Open on a number of occasions.

Sheila will be talking about the development of her current work TYPICAL WOMAN, a self portrait which considers the idea of portraiture through a collection of made and found objects and the narratives they reveal.

Our occasional Unfinished Business events offer the opportunity to get a behind the scenes insight into the research and development of artists’ work, focusing on the development of a piece of work or project, still in progress, by a Blue Monkey member. We can consider different artists’ approaches to their starting points and ways of developing their work and its context, exploring academic research, material testing, reading, dreaming, changes of plan, timing, blind alleys, red herrings, breakthroughs, searching out help, sourcing stuff, chucking stuff out, gathering together, presentation of the work and the mysterious, exciting and vulnerable state, of a work in progress.
