Alchemy was a system in which the symbolic, the visual, the ‘spiritual’ and the material (scientific) coexisted. Adrian Holme, a lecturer, writer and artist with a science background in biology, looks at the moment when the alchemical approach gave way to modern science, relating this to a shift away from an integrated world-view to a progressive division between ‘art’ and ‘science’, favouring the precision of text over image as the preferred form of serious discourse. Artist Christina Mitrentse will discuss her drawings, sculptures and installations. With influences dating back to a childhood immersed in her physicist father’s science library, her work creates a developing visual language which unites the symbolic, visual, spiritual and scientific. Visual Science is the latest in an ongoing series of cross-disciplinary discussion events organised by ideas-matter-sphere. The events bring together speakers and audiences to explore and discuss ideas in an informal environment, using a point of connection within each contributor’s work as a starting point. Join us and be part of the discussion. – Where: The Devereux, 20 Devereux Court, Temple, London WC2R 3JJ – When: Starts at 7pm, doors open at 6.30pm – Tickets: £6.50 on the door To book please email [email protected]
